On this day we recall Our Lady's being assumed into Heaven and crowned Queen. Note that Mary was assumed into Heaven -- taken up by the power of God, like Elias and Enoch -- while Christ ascended into Heaven under His own power.
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is a defined dogma of the Catholic Church. The Feast of the Assumption commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven - a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of tie. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obligation.
The Solemnity of the Assumption is Thursday, August 15th, and is a holy day of obligation in the dioceses of the United States. Please make plans to attend the celebration of Mass to mark this special day.
